I used a Hellgramite, one of the best bait for Smallmouths .After fishing at Tempe Town Lake I decided to drive north a long way to another lake, after my success at Tempe Town Lake I was pretty confident that I could expand on dinner. At the lake, I have read that they are highly protective of their bedding, so I rented a boat and headed for the bedding.I was especially surprised when I caught a 6 pound lunker with my 250 pound Kevlar Braided Line I knew that a thicker line would not snap at a big pull.Too bad I did not beat the state record, but that was surely one big fish.

Lake elevation is 2,104 feet, 50-percent full. April 12 report from James Goughnour of Rim Country Custom Rods. Good morning Rim Country Anglers. Roosevelt Lake is on its way to becoming a better fishery. This past week 275,000 Florida strain bass fry were put into the lake. The survival rate for fry bass will be low, but even if 1percent survive, that could be enough for the Florida bass to thrive in the lake to produce into big numbers. There are another 1-2 stockings that will take place over the next couple of weeks with the final number of fry bass ranging between 400,000-500,000. AZGFD also plans to restart the Bubbling Pond warm water fish hatchery and add habitat to Roosevelt Lake. All of these steps will be a long term solution aimed at improving the fishing experience on Roosevelt Lake. AZGFD is offering $50,000 in matching funds to purchase more bass for Roosevelt Lake. So for every dollar donated to help Roosevelt Lake, AZGFD will match it. If you would like to make a donation, it can be mailed to AZGFD, 5000 W. Carefree Hwy, Phoenix, AZ. In the memo line, add the words Roosevelt Lake Bass and those dollars will only be used for our hometown lake. Bass fishing was called good-excellent this past week. The calm winds helped anglers find bedding bass and it is clear the spawn is in full swing. Reports are that largemouth bass are spawning in 4 feet of water or less while smallmouth bass were seen spawning in deeper water, such as 15 feet. The major spawn should continue for the next couple of weeks, especially with this full moon. Spawning will last for some bass well into June so don't give up on fishing just because the majority of bass have spawned. Senko baits were again reported successful as were reaction type baits. Several reports were given that as a bass was being reeled in, there were several other bass following it. A few reports of top water success were received, but most experienced anglers say a good top water bite is still a few weeks away. Crappie fishing was called fair on Roosevelt Lake last week. The crappie spawn is underway. A hot spot for crappie this past week is around the marina, not the tires, the outside of the main marina structure. Here is another hint from an experienced crappie guide, always pitch your bait to the shadiest or darkest areas of cover. Mother's Day is just around the corner. Rim Country Custom Rods is offering 10% off custom rod orders for Moms. We offer a variety of blank colors and you can have your mom's name put on the rod or a Happy Mother's Day message.
