Lake elevation is 2,103 feet, 48-percent full. March 29 report from James Goughnour of Rim Country Custom Rods The big news among rim country anglers this past week was the roundtable meeting with the Arizona Game & Fish Dept. related to improving Roosevelt Lake. Chief Cantrell reported the 400,000 fingerling Florida strain bass will be stocked into Roosevelt this spring. In addition, meetings are underway to obtain approvals for habitat in the lake. Roosevelt Lake remained at 50-percent full but the flows into the lake are down significantly from normal rates. Bass fishing was called “good” this past week. The high winds we had last week seemed to slow things down a bit. We are getting reports of some fish starting to spawn, and within the next week or two there should be many fish seen in shallow water. Fish are also in either a pre or post spawn phase meaning they are feeding activity and can be caught on a wide virility of baits. The number one bait reported this past week is the Spider bait. The unique design of the spider bait forces bass to attack the baits. Other successful baits included spinner and chatter baits. Several crank and jerk baits are working well and crawdad imitation baits are working extremely well. When you catch a bass, always check inside the mouth. If the mouth is red inside, most likely the redness is caused from the crushers breaking shells of crawdads. If it lacks redness most like the bass is feeding on shad. Rim lake trout anglers are welcoming the opening of most of the rim trout lakes. With the mild winter we've had, there will be a lot of hold-over trout in these lakes. Spinner baits in a size 0 or dry flies such as a wooly bugger or streamer flies were reported successful. The stocking of rim lakes has started and will include more lakes over the next month. Check ww.azgfd.gov for a complete stocking schedule. Crappie fishing was called fair on Roosevelt Lake last week. Crappie have started to spawn but not in big numbers yet. The male crappie turn black with bright blue-green metallic spots during the spawn so be on the lookout in shady areas for crappie. Have a great week of fishing and I hope see you on the water.

Went fishing on Sunday with a friend and we killed them. We were doing some bed fishing with tubes and we pulled up more than 20 largemouth bass. We also saw some yellow bass chasing our tubes back to the boat so we started throwing some small crankbaits and we caught another 8. We also caught two crappie and one was 2+ pounds. It was a great day on the lake.
