The waters of the Pungo River get less pressure than some of the areas to the south. The Pungo is loaded with fishable features such as creek mouths, sod banks and flats. Species present are widely varied and include flounder, speckled trout, gray trout, stripers, croaker, puppy drum and, starting in midsummer, large tarpon that migrate north from Florida waters.
This is a boat spot. Anglers unfamiliar with the area should consult charts prior to launching and should proceed with caution. Check the area boat ramps for the best launch location - there's a ramp to the north in Belhaven, NC. It’s best, however, to fish with a local guide your first time out.
