Bass, Guadalupe

Description
A small fish native to Texas and found only in Texas, Guadalupe bass are in the same waterways where one can find the larger smallmouth bass. Due to their rarity, anglers are strongly encouraged to practice catch-and-release. They are also known as the official Texas state fish.
The Guadalupe bass is generally green in color and can be distinguished the smallmouth by the lack of vertical bars on its flanks. The jaw does not extend beyond the eyes as in largemouth bass and coloration extends much lower on the body than in spotted bass.

Unlike largemouth bass, Guadalupe bass prefer moving currents.
Range
Native to the northern and eastern Edwards Plateau including the headwaters of the San Antonio River, the Guadalupe River above Gonzales, the Colorado River north of Austin and portions of the Brazos River drainage. Occurring also in the lower Colorado River and the Nueces River system.
