The gang at Taylor Park Marina says the fishing is great. Here's what they sent us this week: "Trolling with pop-gear and nightcrawlers is working for both rainbows and lake trout.  The lakers are deeper, but if using weight or downriggers you can find them in around 70 feet of water. The rainbows are shallower and most are trolling along the west bank of the lake. Pike have slowed down a bit. There are some 40-inch pike down around Texas Point, but nobody has been able to bag one."

Ice out is near or here for most Colorado lakes and reservoirs!!! An above average warm winter is resulting in earlier than normal ice-out conditions. Antero, 11 Mile, and Blue Mesa are all starting to show areas of fishable open water! I had one last ice trip on Blue Mesa yesterday. We left around noon and I wouldn't advise anyone getting on Blue Mesa ice any more this year. Taylor still has 30" of good ice with minimal snow and slush on top. Eleven Mile is about 80% open water and Antero is close to that. ICE OUT is here!!! This is one of the most fun trout action times of the year so, be sure to take advantage of it! Large numbers of hungry fish are going to be cruising shallow looking for an easy meal! If you are interested in a trip now or during some of our peak kokanee fishing times, please call and reserve your preferred date(s) soon because a lot of the better fishing times are booking up fast!

This is a 2,000 acre reservoir located northeast of Gunnison. It freezes early and as of mid February has about 20 to 30 inches of ice. Anglers can expect to catch lake trout and rainbow trout. During the winter, the road is plowed to the Taylor Park Trading Post. The road to the Taylor Park Marina from the Taylor River Road (FR 742) is no longer maintained through the winter. It is advised that ice fishermen plan to access the reservoir by snowmobile, snowshoes or skis as snow depths otherwise make access difficult. For updated ice conditions, contact the Taylor Park Trading Post at (970) 641-2555 or the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Gunnison office (970-641-7060).

We fished Taylor about a month ago and had great action in the first ten minutes of the day and the last ten minutes of the day! Slow fishing filled the gaps between these two times, but we ended up with two nice fish and our fishing addiction temporarily filled!

I've been pike fishing up at Taylor for the last 3 days in a row and it's been decent, not awesome.  I've managed to see at least a half dozen fish each day and have landed a couple daily.  I know that a couple other guys have seen some 20 pounders around the shallows, but I'd say that what I've been seeing has been more in the 25-35 inch range.  Most of the water temps that I've been seeing have been in the low 50s and I've been focusing on water that's no deeper than thigh deep on me.  I've been sticking with huge, 10-12" long, black and red streamers for the most part as well.  We've got the pike tournament coming up this weekend and I think that over the next couple weeks the water temps in the shallows should begin warming just a little bit more, encouraging more fish to move in shallow.
