Night fishing on the river near Merrifield park is about the only time I can get out to fish. With the dam upriver closed, waters are just calm enough to sit out from the base of the bridge about 30 ft. with 2 anchors. My preferred method is crankin' about 4-10 ft down. Casting under the bridge and a medium retrieve into the light line crossing in front of the supports. Couple other good spots too, but I'm not giving them up!

Rainbow or steelhead trout Description: Ever popular among Indiana anglers is the trout family, which includes the brown, lake and rainbow or steelhead trout. Many fisherman can be spotted on the shores during spawning season when the trout begin their runs into the tributaries. Rainbow or steelhead trout have a white mouth, teeth and gums and small black spots on their backs, sides, and caudal and dorsal fins. The caudal fin margin of the rainbow or steelhead trout is square and the fish has 9-12 anal fin rays. Bait: flys Depth: shallow gravel flats Comments about fish: The steelhead spawn is almost over but there are still some fish on the gravel making for some additional fishing opportunities. As of May 9th, 9,393 spring steelhead have been counted moving past the South Bend Fish Ladder. Combined with the steelhead that moved into the river last fall, the total steelhead count is up to 16,761 fish. The South Bend fish ladder is passing an average of 91 fish per day. Take advatage of this rare opportunity anglers. Very rarely do we see steelhead spawning this late in mid May. Comments about body of water: River water levels are perfect for both boat and shore anglers. River water temperature is 68 degrees. The fishing hotline will now be updated weekly until the spring steelhead migration is over. Thank you for your interest in the St. Joe River Trout and Salmon program.
