There are only a few steelhead left in the river but the large (20+lb) carp have been moving in. Also as of last week the root has taken its Sumer color making sight fishing very difficult.

With this weeks rain, the Root has become un fishable again. If it recedes at the rate it was going two weeks ago, it'll take close to three weeks before its fishable.

Fishing Friday 3-22-13 was fantastic. Between my two clients, they ended up landing 9 steelhead with a 7lb average and the largest being 12lbs. Fishing Saturday the 23rd came to a hault. I ended up missing two and that was it. In the 7hrs on the river I only saw two other fish landed and one was caught by a guy who had been fishing the same hole for 6hrs.

For the river being open and fishable I had very little success earlier this week, I missed a few fish on spawn and did not have a single take on the fly rod. In my opinion not a whole lot of fish moved up with the last rain we had.

Took a run down to the root yesterday to kill some time. The majority of the river is iced up but there are a very few holes still open and fishable. Expect limited success in these holes seeing the water is low and gin clear.

The water levels have dropped to very low levels. There are still fish to be found but with the clarity being almost gin clear, lighter line and smaller presentations are a must. I got out with a buddy yesterday and I managed landing 4 steelhead and my buddy landed 2 steelhead and one post spawn brown trout

I ran a guide trip this evening starting 2:00pm. After missing a few fish my client ended up with a nice 5lb female brown trout. I ran both spawn and jigs with wax worms and the spawn had all the action.

With the lack of rain in the recent weeks the Root River is extremely low.  The only remaining fish are going to be found in the deeper holes.  This river will be basically non fishable untill we get a considerable amount of rain

The water level is still extremely low but it is fishable and there are a few chinooks moving up.  I ended up stopping down for a few minutes today and ended up landing a 10lb female chinook and saw six or seven other fish moving up river.  Even though there are still a bunch of people on the river, fishable water can be found.

The water levels peaked at 60cfs yesterday and have been rapidly falling.  This spike in water level was not enough to push any Skamina Steelhead into the river.

Ended up with 6 steelhead and 4 brown trout this morning.  Spawn sacs were the trick.  Could of possibly hit 20 fish but ran out of spawn and the fish did not want to see tube jigs for some reason.

Went out this afternoon 1-3pm.  Had a very tough time finding fish.  With the river coming up after last week's rain, there should be no reason why there was not a ton of fresh fish pushing up.  Ended up with one very dark male steelhead.

For only fishing an hour and going 2-3 on Brown Trout, it was not to  bad of a evening.  It's nice to see a few fresh fish moving up with this past weeks rains.

Took a run down to the Root River this late afternoon.  The water level is perfect for floating bobbers and spawn sacs, but a little dirty for flies.  I did manage landing one male brown trout around 5lbs.

If Coho Salmon are the spices you seek, the Root River is full of them.  Small egg patterns have been working the best with small streamers being productive also.

Fished the Root River with my F-N-L yesterday (10/18/12). There are tons and I mean tons of fish in the river. So many they're swimming around you. They were harvesting the eggs yesterday also. There are some monster Browns in the river as well as Chinook, Rainbow and Steelhead. We got there around 11:30 and saw a bunch of anglers. Apparently the bite was better earlier in the morning as some of the anglers were saying. Saw some guys catching fish, but not a lot of action. Did see a few guys snagging, which was not good, but at least they released the fish. Gonna try Lake Michigan Harbor this evening and possibly the Milwaukee River. Tight lines and I don't mean snags!
