Best fishing is when there is chop on the water and the Lohanton’s are close to shore where they can be reached with a shooting head from a ladder. Stripping a pyramid bugger with a tadpole or snail dropper. A strip and pause will yo-yo action on the snail initiates a strike. Good reports around Wino and Pelican where anglers are hooking the cutts. Use at least 2X tippet for these big fish. Maholo midges under an indicator are also producing. Open and fishing fairly well. The stories are that the fish are bigger this year but not as many as past years. Indicator fishing has been strong with rumor of a 20 pound fish on Chironomids. Fish early and late or on windy days for best success. If you have been waiting to catch your 10# plus, this is the year to spend the time out there. As we get into the month of May the fish are starting to bunch up for the spawn and the number of fish caught is increasing.

Open and fishing fairly well but mostly from boats and float tubes. Some fish have been caught fishing from shore and a few big ones as well which is great for Winter season fishing! The fish are eating the Chubs so look for pods of bait fish and throw streamers to match! Indicator fishing has been strong with rumor of a 20 pound fish on a Chironomid. This has been one of the best seasons recorded on Pyramid for size of fish but not for numbers. If you have been waiting to catch your 10# plus, this is the year to spend the time out there.

long cold spell in the Reno area.....supposed to be a little warmer over the next week or so with sunny skies. The fishing at Pyramid is pretty average for this time of year. Cold water in December-January tends to move most of the fish into deeper water in search of a little warmer conditions. There are however a few fish being caught from shore anglers. This year continues to produce some large fish. The fish are really spread out and the reports are coming from all over the lake. It is pretty much a given that you are not going to catch more than a few fish a day right now but the chance to catch a fish of a lifetime keeps anglers coming. February is a great month to catch big fish at Pyramid. There are less little fish in shallow and the larger fish make a pass through shallow water from time to time. There are fewer fishermen and more chances when the fish come by. A bunch of different flies are also catching fish. Bloody Marys, Midnight Cowboys, Olive Martinis are always good and White Wooly Worms and Popcorn Beetles are great options for droppers.
Note: Use 12-15 pound tippet on your shooting head set-ups. If you do get the chance to hook into one of these monsters dont take a chance with light tippet.

So far the fly fishing reports have been as expected. After a very warm summer and early fall the water is still very warm. This usually keeps fish in a little deeper water as is the case now. The boaters are catching a bunch of fish in 20-40 feet of water trolling. As for fly fishermen, the best reports have been coming from Pontoon Boats and Float Tubes. There are schools of Tui Chubs schooled up on various beaches and there are some Cuttys around them. Fast sinking lines and Minnow Patterns are your best bet. There are some locals fishing the lake. We have our die hards like anywhere else. If you can find some Float Tubers with Nevada license Plates you are on the right track. Reports of a 20 Pound Cutthroat caught over the weekend might make the drive worthwhile.

There are still a few die hards fishing Pyramid. Reports have actually been pretty good. The cooler weather has kept the water in pretty good shape and there are still some fish cruising the shallows. 5-20 fish days are common right now. South end beaches like Wino, Sand hole and Blockhouse are doing well Beaches further North like the North Nets Spider Point and Warrior. Maholo Midges and Nymphs have been catching a lot of fish with floating lines and Bloody Mary's, Olive Martini's and Popcorn Beetles on shooting heads. The lake closes to fishing on June 30th.

Lohanton cutthroat are moving into the shallows. Best days are with wind coming from the SE or NE to change the thermocline and warm up the water in the shallows. Best access is from a boat or float tube when it’s not hazardous conditions. Big Lohanton Cutthroat will cruise along the drop-off in 5-10 feet of water feeding on tui chubs, scuds and midges. Strip a pyramid bugger with a tadpole dropper with a fast sinking shooting head on a 7wt rod. Little Truckee is fishing well with the lack of runoff. Flows are high (235 cfs) but fishable. Best fishing is with small midge and baetis nymphs under an indicator along the edges where big fish will hold to get out of the main current. Hooking fish has been good this week, but landing fish has been difficult using small flies on light tippet. Inevitably, big fish will go into main current and bust the tippet with one shake of the head. Streamers are getting some big browns but not as productive as small nymphs.

Clear, good lake level.
Fishing is fair. Water is high this year. Casting past the drop off from your ladder isn’t as easy as it was last year. Fishing will peak when wind and waves stir the water bringing fish into the shallows. Best access is from a boat or float tube when its not hazardous conditions. Big Lohanton Cutthroat are cruising along the drop-off in 5-10 feet of water feeding on tui chubs. Strip a pyramid bugger with a tadpole dropper. The tadpole has a foam back. Vary your retrieve between slow and fast with a pause to float the tadpole. A fast sinking shooting head on 7wt rod is best for making long casts in wind.

Clear, good lake level. Fishing is fair. Best fishing is when the wind stirs up the water. Hit and miss reports from Pelican and Warrior. The Lohantans are eating tui-chub minnows. A pyramid bugger with a tadpole tied off the bend of the bugger is a deadly combination. Vary your retrieve between slow and fast with a pause to float the tadpole. A fast sinking shooting head on a 7 or 8wt rod is ideal. Fish are in 5-10 feet of water. The drop off is a little further out due to higher lake levels.
