off the charts trout fishing in the north state as Pit 3 is fishing the best and least difficult to wade sections 3, 4 or 5. High stick with black copper johns size 12 and pt’s size 14 on the bottom. Also right near dark or on cloudy days the caddis hatch turns on. Use elk hair or ec caddis size 14. Wade with caution. Conditions are improving every day and fishing is really turning on. Bring a wading staff!! Pit #3, 4 or 5 black nymphs and rubber legs, also on dries using elk hair caddis size 14.www.jacktrout.com, (530) 926-4540

No big changes this week kids. Last weeks report was a good one and this week is no different. The Pit is giving up good insect hatches comprised of Golden Stones, Caddis, Midges, Mayflies. Fishing should be great all day long!

Flows are perfect now and river is the best condition for a spring opener in years on the Pit River Pit 3, #4 Flows & #5 Flows below Lake Britton Dam down to Power House 5 and Big Bend. Water now running clear and fishing well. Use princes size 14, rubber legs size 12 with a smaller beaded nymph like a Hairs Ear size 14. Cycle through nymphs that are size 14 & 12’s use heavier nymphs on top and smaller nymph below off setting colors has been effective. Bring a wading staff always on the Pit River and use some shin protectors, also consider a PFD wading vest for floatation, this river can be difficult to wade in places where it is hard to see the ground, feel your way around leaning on your staff. Also consider bringing a sink tip 300 grains and using some heavy crystal bugger patterns size 6 as well as in green or back buggers size 8.
double nymph rigs with lots of weight like use one or two size SSG Dinsmore weights above your two nymphs. Rely on high sticking and stay attached to your flies for best results.

Flows will be a little high on the Pit River so use caution when wading and fish edges from Pit 3, #4 Flows & #5 Flows below Lake Britton Dam down to Power House 5 and Big Bend. Water still a little off color due to snow melt, but fishing well. Use princes size 14, rubber legs size 12 with a smaller beaded nymph like a Hairs Ear size 14. Cycle through nymphs that are size 14 & 12’s use heavier nymphs that get down and dirty. Bring a wading staff and think about possible using some shin protectors and PFD wading vest for floatation, this river can be difficult to wade in places and hard to see ground, you kind of feel your way around leaning on your staff. Also consider bringing a sink tip 350 grains and using some heavy Blood Sucking leech patterns size 6 as well as crystal buggers size 8.

This is such a great time to fish this stream. Golden stones are coming off. You can find good dry fly fishing at sun-down as adult stoneflies drop to the river's surface to lay eggs. High stick technique using dark stonefly patterns and pheasant tail nymphs in #14-18 is a productive approach.

Flows will be a high on the Pit river so use caution when wading and fish edges from Pit 3, 4 & 5 below Lake Britton Dam down to Power House 5 and Big Bend. Water could be off color due to snow melt, but should be fishable. Use princes size 14, rubber legs size 12 with a smaller beaded nymph like a Hairs Ear size 14. Cycle through nymphs that are size 14 & 12’s use heavier nymphs that get down and dirty. Bring a wading staff and think about possible using some shin protectors, this river can be like fishing around the goalie in a soccer match, but also very rewarding when the trout bite is on mid day to late afternoons as things warms up. also consider bringing a sink tip 350 grains and using some heavy Blood Sucking leech patterns size 6 as well as crystal buggers size 8.

Very, very muddy and blown out this week. Expect conditions to improve by the weekend, maybe. There is another wet system approaching late this week. Even Pit#3 has a discouraging brown color through it's entire lenght. Hang in there. Conditions will improve!

Rains over the past week have created muddy, blown out water conditions on much of the Pit this week. Fishing has been tough as a result. Expect better reports early next week. To find the best water, look near Lake Britton Dam and near the base of Pit #4 dam. Pit #5 is going to be muddy and very high due to run-off.

River conditions have improved. The fishing has been good and should remain good through the week. Anglers have been doing best on Red Copper Johns in #14-16, Pat's Rubber Legs, Deceptive Crays and Dark Lords
October caddis nymphs should be in your fly box along with smaller nymphs ranging in size from #12-18. A #14-16 Pheasant Tail Nymph is a very consistent fly on the Pit. Under a medium sized indicator, fish a #6-8 Pat's rubber Legs and a #14 pheasant tail nymph or #14-16 prince nymph. Mercer's #16 black Micro-Mayfly is another great fly. High-stick and short line angling techniques are very, very effective on this stream.

Good water conditions and good fishing is what the Pit River offers this week and every week to come. A big storm will cause changes to water conditions and the fishing, but until then, go fish this river and expect to find enough rainbows to call it a "good fishing experience" at the very least. A few October Caddis are around, but the main bug on the menu is going to be #14-16 nymphs, like pheasant tails, prince nymphs, RK Flatulators, Pseudo Mays... think small and black.

Still fishing great! October caddis hatches are the big focus late in the day. Various October Caddis nymphs have been working. The rainbows seem to key on these nymphs just as they swing up at the end of the presentation (search: Leisenring lift). Day time fishing is productive. Anglers fishing dark colored nymphs like Princes, Dark Lords, PTs, even black Copper Johns are doing well this week.

Fishing continues to be great this week. Nothing new to reports other than rain and cloudy weather may produce hatches of baetis/BWOs. Bring a few #16-18 mayfly nymphs this week. Definitely a good October Caddis hatch this year. These bugs put the rainbows near the edges of the river where they look for emerging adults. The fishing has been good all day and a few fish are always found eating near the surface at sunset. The fishing has been good!

October never disappoints on the Pit River. The rainbows almost always key on bigger meals thanks to October Caddis pupa moving around on the bottom of the river. Fishing should remain great all week! Next week too!
Contact us about the Pit River via e-mail or call 800-669-3474.
Bring the wading staff! We highly recommend wearing a PFD (Personal Floatation Device) too. The Pit River is a demanding river to wade thanks to slippery, bowling-ball like boulders and rocks. Keeps the crowds down!
The Fly Shop's® Tips: October caddis nymphs and Pat's Rubber Legs imitate the October caddis pupa. October caddis dry flies like orange stimulators and Turck's Tarantula can be effective when the rainbows are eating the ovipositing October adult. Can be fished all day in the slower glides. Suspend a Poopah or a Pheasant Tail nymph off your October Caddis dry. Under a medium sized indicator, fish a #6-8 Pat's rubber Legs or through the day. Suspend a #16 black Micro-Mayfly underneath. #14-18 Pheasant Tail Nymphs should be in every fly box. Fishing near sunset is a great plan. High-stick and short line angling techniques are very, very effective on this stream.

Well, it's back to business on the Pit. There are no closures limiting your access to the Pit. The Pit up near Lake Britton (Pit #3) is fishing great. Good reports coming out of Pit #4 too! Good fishing is what the Pit is all about! Insect hatches to be prepared for include Isonychia, #16 tan cddis, #16 black caddis. You might find a few Pale Evening Duns (PEDs) coming off near sunset too.

We heard a few fair reports this week. It happens. Don't be discouraged. We believe the good fishing is out there, but the fish can take a day or two off. That's fishing. We think the Pit is a solid, top-choice option for the angler looking to wade a stream, hook big bows and enjoy some solitude.

You will find good fishing on the Pit river this week and next week. Our guides have been reporting in with "Big Fish" looks on their faces. September rarely disappoints anglers on the Pit thanks to hatches of Isonychia (looks like a small black stonefly, about a #8 or #10). There's a sparse caddis hatch mid day that gets the fish going. Pit#3 near Lake Britton dam is a long, long way from the Bagley fire and a solid option for fishing anyday of the week.
