Our spring fishery is starting turn to summer. Over the past couple weeks the steelhead have been making a lot of progress. Most steelhead have already run up river , spawned, and are turning around towards Lake Michigan. Although, we did see a decent number of new steelhead show up this week to refill some spots. I bet we are at about the 90% mark as far as completing spring steelhead run. Still, I was pleasantly surprised by the number of steelhead showing themselves at the beginning of this week after not hearing about or seeing many over the weekend. Some of the older steelhead are hanging around the gravels, while most are starting to drop back. We have a few nice chrome fish that just got here but don’t be mistaken with the water in the 60’s they won’t stick around too long. If you are trying to catch another steelhead before the Spring 2013 run is over don’t wait!

Trout fishing has been really good with the water warming up a bit. We are taking trout all hours of the day on a variety of techniques. From now until early July we will have our peak dry fly fishing. The insect activity is already going strong with sightings of Hendrickson's, stones, quills, blue wing olives, and a few caddis. Fish have been looking up all day taking a few flies during the high sun and heat of the afternoon and taking advantage of the evenings. Most bugs this time of the year hatch while the weather is nicest. The warmer days have been producing better dry fly action. It’s time to start thinking about leaving the big guns behind for a 4wt or 5wt on these nice days.

Nymphs are a great way to get it done right now. The dry fly action has to start somewhere and right now there are a lot of bugs on the bottom of the river. They are ready to let loose of their rocks and logs to hatch making them more available to the trout. The water clearity has been good for nymphing. We had good flows with good visibility. The trout are biting the usual stuff like small black stones, olive and tan stones, green caddis, pheasant tails, zug bugs, princes, and anything else small dark and buggy. It is still worth your time to run an egg fly behind your nymph as well.

The river flows have been good to us this year. We have enough stain that the trout aren’t terribly spooky and the steelhead are tolerating the warm days. If you have been here since we recovered from the big flood you would know what I mean when I say the water just looks fishy. It still has enough clarity so that we can see fish good and they can see your flies but you can get away with a little more than usual. The Pere Marquette has receded back into its banks and is wadable through the fly water and other good wade spots down river.
The streamer fishing has been pretty consistent with the good flows and the warm days. They have been chasing about any color with the best being olive, green, black, white, and ginger. We have been getting a lot more action on small or medium size streamers. The big streamers have been producing fewer fish but we have had some good chases and a few willing to commit. The streamer game will be on when we get another shot of warm rain that washes a little more color into the river.

Summer is here and it is time to enjoy . Get out there and take advantage of the nice weather and all the trout water that is open through the end of September. The crowds have thinned out to the point where you should only see a few other fisherman all day in the easy spots and nobody if you go far enough.

Fishing on the PM was pretty good today with both streamers and nymphs. Mike and Jay joined me for the day to work on their nymphing skills and to try their hand at streamer fishing. Nymphing was pretty good first thing in the morning and as the temps warmed up (maybe by a couple of degrees, he he) the streamer bite picked up some momentum as well. With the recent rain the worms were crawling on the pavement this morning and a little "garden hackle" had a few fish on the bite. Smaller pheasant tails and prince nymphs also got took some fish. Several streamers worked well today, but smaller flies in white brought more fish to hand. Black, Yellow, and Olive streamers were also producing for us. We saw a couple of fish rise today and a few insects hatching, but with the cooler weather the bug activity was at a minimum. Overall it was a fun day on the water mixing it up with floats and sink tips.

I know it's still steelhead season and there are still steelhead in the river. But the Brown Trout Rule! I thought Joe, Drew and I were having a banner day. Only to find out Casey V. & Devon had beaten us by a couple of inches. Then Uber went out on Monday and topped us all with a giant brown. Nice job buddy.

Trout season is here!!!  We had fantastic weather for the trout opener and plenty of fish and smiles to go around.  There was an extremely high number of anglers on the waters this past weekend chasing the trout on the opening weekend.  With plenty of steelhead lurking the river, many anglers enjoyed both steelhead and trout fishing.  The weather couldn't have been any nicer and everyone at least got to enjoy being warm.

The trout fishing has been through the roof so far this spring and the past weekend was no exception.  With steelhead now taking a backseat to trout, many targeted our healthy population of brown trout.  We have been getting them with a variety of tactics.  Eggs and nymphs have been taking many big fish.

Streamer season is in full gear now and the fish are ready to take a shot at a quick meal.  We have also been throwing some hardware around.  Regardless of the technique, there is nothing better than the sight of a giant trout setting his sights on your offering and absolutely hammering it!  Seeing is believing.

Dry fly fishing is available too.  BWO's, black stones and Hendrickson's are all flying in the air throughout the day.  Hatches will only increase in frequency and duration.  Fish are starting to look up and it's not to soon to grab your favorite dry fly rod.  Look for fish to be feeding along the shore in seams and eddy's.

May is a great month to hit the river.  With much of the traffic diminishing during the week, you can find yourself at peace with nature and the river.  Much of our trout fishing will start to focus more on the evenings.  We have many techniques in our arsenal to ensure you a shot at a trophy no matter your preference.

Please practice catch and release on our resident brown trout.  With some of the richest brown trout brood stock and heritage here, it's a shame to only enjoy our fish once.  With a lineage dating back to the late 1800's the Pere Marquette is home to the first brown trout ever planted in North America.  Our fish take some time to put size on, and the only way we can sustain our healthy large fish population is through careful catch and release of our resource.

For those of you looking to sharpen your trout game we will be offering an entire series of classes throughout the next few months.  We also offer fly fishing lessons on weekends at the shop.  Please stop in and see us, or call the shop today to book and upcoming class.

Like father like son. Nice job Noah, Congratulations on graduation and best of luck in the future.

Way to take the shop boys out and show'em how to get it done.

I look forward to seeing you on the water.  Chris "Uber" Raines.

My Beautiful Sami, I have had such a great time fishing with you the past two Saturdays in a row. I love you Dad.

Owen, you ROCK. For eleven years old You fish better and harder than most adults I fish with.

I know it's not from the PM but I just had to show off Owen's 42" Pike. I'm telling you this kid can fish!

Well the third high water event of the season has hit and is on it's way out. Recent rains brought the river to nearly the same level we were at a week ago and a month ago which brought in the first large run of the season. This one has brought in the remainder of the spring run of steelhead and the fishing has been great recently. Even with the high water we have been battling many strong fish in this heavy water. Those of which we could chase down, we have...the others, well, they all gave great rides.

The high and dirty water have allowed us to use heavy line and larger flies. Even with the heavy water, the heavy gear makes a great equalizer. Flies have been up sized to 6's and 8's. Natural colors have been exchanged for bright and florescent Larger egg patterns have been working well. Big nymphs such as black and yellow stones have been producing, as well as fry patterns.

Way to knock down the big browns Lou.

Streamer fishing has been good as well. These water conditions coupled with the up tick in water temps have the trout hunting up their next meal. The overall lack of steelhead eggs has not been enough for the big boys, and they are on the prowl. Streamers both large and small are working. If you are looking for Hawg Johnson, or his brother, presentation is as important as pattern. I have always said that I will take a bad fly fished well over a great fly fished improperly.

Most fish have been taken while using running lines and heavier weights. However, indy fishing with floating lines will work as long as you can maintain proper line management. Mending and controlling your line is difficult with the high fast water. Swing fishing is producing a bit again. These conditions are nearly perfect for the swingers out there.

We should see good steelhead fishing for the next week or two. After that most of the spring run should be over for 2013. It has been a great year and we have had many successful fly fishers catch wild Pere Marquette steelhead. Wild steelhead offer wonderful memories and they should be treated with the utmost care and respect.

I know we all love to get that picture, but it shouldn't be at the expense of the fish. Think about it as you wrestle one in the net, then throw him on the bank, then get your picture and toss him back. There is a better way. Try not to take the fish out of the water any longer than you can hold your breathe...think about it...fish can't breathe air. Don't throw the fish on the banks to remove the hooks. Use a soft net, a landing mitt and a revival tool (aka Boga Grip). Keep your fish in the water, with the head pointed upstream. Get your picture, then revive him with his head upstream. Feel the fish, as it gains energy it will kick. Let it go and enjoy another wild steelhead release.

My day on the water with Mike was a real Eye Opener on how bad I really don't have it. Mike is battling Lou Gehrig's Disease and it is taking a toll on his physical abilities. But that didn't stop him from fishing a full day and putting a hurt on the fish; 6 for 7 on Brown Trout and 1 for 8 on Steelhead. I am so privileged to have been your guide Mike and would be honored if you ever want to do it again. Our prayers go out to you and your family in your fight against L.G.D. Mark thanks for introducing us and providing me the opportunity to hang with Mike.

It's not to late to take a shot at your own wild PM steelhead. Do you have what it takes? Some would say that it doesn't get any better than this. Now is the time to get some steel. Crowds are diminishing through out the week, weekends are still busy, but nothing like they have been. Come and enjoy our river.

Guided fishing on the Pere Marquette River

Fishing Report & Water Conditions Pere Marquette River:

Water Conditions: Water is starting to clear, and starting to drop again.

Water levels: 1820 Water temp: 43-45

The lower Pere Marquette River below Indian Bridge is fishing well for fresh Steelhead as well as drop backs! Some numbers of new fish have entered the Pere Marquette, but most fish are spawners or drop backs. Fish have been spawning in the upper river, but many have spawned out and starting to drop back with the higher water last week. Fishing will remain fair to good into late April and May. Egg patterns have been working well in the lower river and smaller nymphs and eggs have been working well in the upper river, along with salmon fry. Streamer fishing has been up and down, some days great, and some days just looking for a pull....

Small Hex nymphs, stones and caddis have been picking up steelhead and trout. Look for smaller blk stones to step up here soon with less water, along with salmon fry patterns!

We do still have a few guides open for Fishing on the Pere Marquette for Spring Steelhead.

Pere Marquette Fall Steelhead: late Oct - Dec is the season for fall steelhead on the Pere Marquette. Less people and out of control fish is what this time of year offers. This is one of my favorite times of the year to fish for some of our best fish!

Spring steelhead season is in full swing. Fresh fish are moving in, and many fish are moving throughout the entire river system. We have had a mixed bag of hole fishing and some sight fishing. Our weather is beginning to warm, and the water is still low and clear. With the warmer sunny days, the water temps are starting to warm and the fish are responding. We still have a fair amount of snow on the ground and have yet to receive our first real big Spring rains. We have had steady and consistent fishing for the past week.

Fish are staging around the gravel beds and when the cloud cover holds, we have had very good fishing. Sunny days, coupled with high angler pressure have made some days trickier than others, but overall we are getting shots at plenty of fish. Both floating lines rigged with indicators and bottom bouncing with running lines are working. Light leaders and natural flies have been working best. Fluorocarbon leaders are a must and presentation is always the key to success.

Leave the bright clothes and bright lines at home. Our fish are very spooky and sensitive to bright colors. The last think you want to do is alert them to your presence before you even get a cast in. Stealth is the key to keeping the fish on the bite and not scaring them off into the wood. Drag free presentations are equally as important. Make sure the fish see your flies in a natural manner first.

As our water has warmed a more diverse form of food has found it's way into the steelheads diet. Salmon fry are beginning to appear in significant numbers. These little fellas provide a big part of both trout and steelheads meals. Additionally, early black stones are starting to fly. More importantly they are swimming around sub surface and they gain the attention of steelhead and trout. Of course with the increased spawning activity, eggs are more plentiful and a very important part of all fishes diets. Fly selection should match these as well.

Things are starting to get quite busy on the river right now. Please respect other anglers and the fish. Remember, the gravel bars that we wade are the home to freshly laid steelhead eggs. It is real easy to stand on a steelhead bed and destroy future fish before they even have a chance to hatch. The Pere Marquette boast's one of the greatest wild steelhead fisheries in the Midwest ..let's help to keep it that way. Please release all wild fish. There are plenty of rivers that offer put and take fishing with hatchery fish...but not on the PM...it's all natural reproduction that we count on for the future.

Here they come! The ten day forecast looks better than it has in the past three months. We are going to be in the mid-30's to low 40's for daytime highs and the nights will barely be dropping below freezing. This weather pattern spells one thing S-P-R-I-N-G steelhead. That's right spring is just around the corner, the days are getting longer and fish are getting frisky.

There are plenty of signs of spawning going on around the river. In fact some fish have hit the gravels and are already headed to the big lake. Don't fret though, plenty of fish are in the system. With an ample snow pack, we should have a nice melt and this will surely bring in our spring run fish.
Eggs are top on the list of flies. Nuke eggs or glo bugs in orange and chartreuse are working best. Nymphs are still on the menu and getting plenty of attention. Streamers are moving up the list as well. With tons of salmon fry emerging from the gravels trout and steelhead will be focusing on these in the next few weeks.
Floating lines with indicators are the go to rigs right now. However with more active fish in and around the river, swinging will get you good results as well. Whatever the method, focus your efforts around the spawning grounds. You will find fish starting to stage near their natal gravels. The pocket water around these areas is your best bet. Fish will begin to transition away from their winter holding lies and edging closer to the rocks. In the next few weeks you can find fresh fish moving throughout the entire river.
Sound good? Or does it sound like some secret code? If you have questions, the answers can be found in our next Steelhead School. We will be holding yet another class this coming weekend. With the weather being perfect this should be a great weekend to be on the river. Call the shop for details.

Here's some food for thought for all of you who ask the question, when is the best time to come. As far as an exact date, I can't help you there, but here is some useful info and general guide lines that tend to hold true.

Spring runs of steelhead are based on several natural events; water level, water temps, and time of year. Both water level and water temps are related to winter snow levels and number of melt offs during the winter. Air temp greatly affects these factors as well.

I have seen several sources including The Weather Channel announce that the Midwest should experience warmer than usual March temps. This combined with the fact that we have a lower than normal snow pack should contribute to an "earlier" spring steelhead run. Remember without the weir in place our runs of steelhead are no longer hindered by this artificial barrier and the fish have been reacting to this with runs returning to there pre-weir timings.

Additionally with the amount of water in the river at this point (early Feb), most of the fish have already made their way up near their spawning grounds. On a normal cold winter the fish hold in the lower river. This year we have had multiple high water events drawing these same fish upstream.

With this in mind and knowing that we have some great March dates left in the books, call the shop today and book your Spring Steelhead trip!

We are at flood stages on the Pere Marquette. There was a nice warm up and a bunch of rain. About half of our snow melted and the river is blown out right now. Temps are going to fall and we will once again have fish moving through out the system. With the high and dirty water, I expect some of the early fall run to start spawning. Water temps bumped up a bit and these late winter high water events always trigger a few fish to hit the rocks.

Keep your eye on the extended weather forecast. We have had several little mid winter thaws and the fishing picks right up with them. Fishing pressure is nil right now and these little warm up offer great shots at winter steelhead and trout. The fact that we have had several high water events will bring fish up out of the lake earlier than usual. We could be looking at an earlier than normal spring run. Don't mark my words, but certainly keep an eye on conditions, and if we continue this mild winter patter we could see good fishing in late Feb and early March.

Flies are across the board right now. Eggs and nymphs are both doing well. Typical egg patterns (nukes and glo bugs) in chartreuse are working. Nymphs are out fishing eggs, try natural colored stone and caddis patterns. Swinging large flies or stripping streamers is probably your best bet in this high and dirty water we have right now.

We will be hosting a series of steelhead schools over the next few weeks. These are great opportunities to get the inside info on these challenging game fish. We cover all aspects of steelhead fishing in these weekend long classes...from rigging, to reading the water, casting, presentation, fly tying, and even a bit of entomology Nearly everyone who has ever attended this class will tell you that it was well worth it. Winter is kicking into full gear around there. We once again have snow covering the ground and cold nights (and days) are building ice on some parts of the river. Winter steelhead are the target, but trout fishing has remained good. I guess the poor little fellas didn't get to stock up on enough salmon eggs before the cold weather got here.

Fishing has been across the board lately. Heck a week and a half ago it was almost 60, all the snow melted and we had some high dirty water. Many fish slipped upstream and a few fresh ones moved into the lower river. These mid-winter warm ups can be good opportunities to bust out the waders and hit the river. We are gonna get a slight warm up this weekend and then really cold again! Break loose of the couch and head this way for some hardcore steelhead fishing. The scenery is great and pressure is low, in fact you may feel like you are the only one on the river (but trust me your not).

Steelhead are really looking for nymphs right now. I have not caught a fish on a egg pattern for a couple of weeks. Stones, caddis and hexes are the best bets. Trout are feeling the same way, nymphs are out producing eggs two to one. However the pale or pink glo bugs do find their way onto my line at least for a few hours each trip. Indicator rigs weighted properly AND ticking the bottom will find fish. If that's not your thing, chuck and duck is arguably the best way of dredging the deep dark holes that hold steelhead this time of year.

Swinging is always a good choice, even if it's to bat clean up after running a spot with indy's. Sometimes fish that are pushed around a bit will tend to grab a brighter swung fly, even after refusing dead drifted presentations. Stripping has out performed swinging as of late. You can present to a wider variety of fish while throwing a sink tip then you can if you are trying any other method. This is a great way to stay warm and fish from one spot to another.

We are offering several more steelhead schools this late winter. Check the site for dates. Remember we have a fleet of drift boats and jet sleds with heaters. You can actually spend a day (or half day) with us and stay dry fishing from the boat....but please do keep an eye on the weather...if it does break, the fish will respond.
