3 fish caught | Lunker: 30lb California Yellowtail using a Sardine

3/4 out of Newport on the Patriot. Headed up the coast and the Captain put us on a reef in the early AM as he said there had been no early Yellowtail bight, might as well try to scratch a few fish and save bait if we can. Couple nice Calicos, sand bass, keeper sheepshead and some assorted perch and rockfish that were released. When the radio keyed up other boats were getting bit we started chasing the boils, birds, kelp etc... Nothing was holding the fish so we would get a couple hook ups at each stop, all quality yellows, no firecracker size. After a few stops and other people bagging fished getting discouraged, switch from 30 to 20lb and using a ringd 3/0 Mustad with a 3/4 slide weight (bumped it up from 1/2 oz. and Bendo! Than I regretted using 20. That thing was working me, good thing the crew was on top of it, after a good battle brought it to gaff. Switched back to 30 and next stop was a frenzy, at least 20 people hooked up at once. Crew ran the hookups like conducting an orchestra, I don't think I saw any tangles or saw offa, if people lost fish it was some issue on there side. I pulled 2 off that stop with 2nd fish not wanting to come in on 30 (in pic). Kept scratching more fish after tell we had to head in. On the way in whale watch reported tuna schooling with the dolphin in Newport area! Investigated but no such luck. Awesome day of local Sportfishing, thanks to the crew of the Patriot, or as the Captain said "best day of local fishing all year"...

What can be said of the yellowtail fishing this time of year except absolutely fabulous. The overnight boats are scoring between 60 to 100 yellowtail a day and local boats are getting some. The calico bass are really starting to bite with some nice sand bass mixed in and you can always fill out your sack with some nice rock fish and lingcod, if you want to go yellowtail fishing hop on a boat and go get them, they are biting baits and yo yo jigs and some surface iron.
