Fishing for steelhead is fair. More summer steelhead will be showing up over the coming weeks. Reports of spring chinook are increasing. Overall fishing is slow to fair. Target tidewater or the lower river for best results. Gear restrictions are in effect in Three Rivers.

Low water exposes the drop off at the bottom end of the boat ramp at Cloverdale. Anglers should use caution. Temporary improvements should be completed soon.

Fishing for steelhead is fair. The catch is mostly dark or spawned winter steelhead, with a few summer steelhead beginning to show. The first spring chinook of the season was reported caught recently. Sporadic reports of a handful of others are coming in, but overall fishing is still slow. Gear restrictions go into effect in Three Rivers beginning May 1.

Around here, late April and Early May have a different feel than the frantic pace of Winter’s call, “The rivers are in shape, gotta go fishing!” It’s time to take a deep breath, reflect over the Winter Steelhead season and get excited for the upcoming Summer fishing season.

The brief pause between seasons gives us a chance to explore new water, catch up on blog posts and photo galleries. Plus, invest some time in other creative projects. Along those lines… the Winter Steelhead Season Recap slide show is now live our our site. Check out some great Winter steelhead imagery from the past few months.

We also had a chance to spend a couple days with the folks from The Contemporary Sportsman Magazine, shooting some fly fishing and Pacific Northwest cooking. It was a great experience, look for us in the Summer issue. Sign up for a free subscription today and get notified via email when the next issue is available. Fishing for winter steelhead has improved. The river is in good shape and should remain that way this week, although it is forecasted to drop through the week. All techniques should be productive, with fish scattered through the system. Spring chinook opens April 1, but few fish are expected to available in the river until May.

Fishing for winter steelhead has been slow. Fishing is also very slow in Three Rivers, but some hatchery fish are available. More rain is needed to bring fish in and improve fishing conditions. Use light tackle while flows are low.

High water late last week should have brought in a new batch of winter steelhead. Prospects look good for this week as the river drops into prime shape. Fish will be spread out in the river. All methods have produced fish, with many people side-drifting eggs or yarn balls, or drift fishing. Bobber and jig will produce better as the river drops. Fishing is slower in Three Rivers, but some hatchery fish are available.

Wow, I can’t believe it’s nearing the end of January, 2013. The first part of this steelhead season has flown by. As the early hatchery run tapers off and we gear up for big native steelhead, it’s a good time for an early season recap.

December, 2012 was characterized by lots of major rain events, high water and plenty of river pressure. Not the greatest combination for hooking big numbers of steelhead. Still, we were on the water a bunch, had a handful of days where we worked hard for a few fish, a bunch of good days with high single digit hookups, and a few great days. In short, it was classic Winter Steelheading. On days the river was in perfect shape, we did really well. If we caught the river high or on the rise, it was a heck of a lot tougher.

January has been a whole different story all together. We’ve had low amounts of rainfall this month and long, cold, clear, dry periods where rivers have dropped to very low levels. We love those kind of conditions and specialize in low, clear, technical steelheading. If you’re up for the challenge, there are plenty of fish to be had when rivers get bone dry. Often times, we have had to struggle through icing guides and reels during the first couple hours of each day, but as the day progressed and the ice subsided, the fish really began to turn on. We witnessed a few of those epic, lower river bites with dozens of fish kegged up in small pockets less than two feet deep. Fish like that can be spooky, but if you find them when the light is right, sometimes it feels like you can do no wrong. It almost feels as if you’re cheating, but only for a minute.

Overall, I would term December and January as generally typical Oregon Coast Steelheading. There are certainly not as many hatchery fish as last year, but then again, last season brought record numbers of hatchery steelhead. Native numbers appear to be decent thus far. There has been a couple early season pushes of big wild fish, with far more to come throughout February and March. We’re excited for the next couple months and can’t wait to put our customers on some of that big native chrome. We’re anxious for the opportunity to put our hands on some of those 40+ inch fish.

The river is in good fishing condition as of last weekend. Increasing numbers of winter steelhead are in the system, with reports of fish being caught in Three Rivers and the mainstem up to and above Beaver. Winter steelhead are being recycled from Cedar Creek Hatchery to the lower river regularly, although the number of fish is declining each week. Boaters are urged to use caution as new hazards may be present following high flows.

The river was high late last week but is predicted to be in good shape by mid-week. Expect fishing for chinook to be slow, with only a few bright fish still available. Anglers are reminded that the river is closed to fishing for chinook upstream of First Bridge (near Beaver). Increasing numbers of winter steelhead are in the system. The best prospects are in Three Rivers for these early returning fish. Winter steelhead are being recycled to the lower river regularly.

If it ever stops raining on the Oregon Coast and the rivers finally get to decent levels there will be good numbers of steelhead available.  The Siletz, Wilson, Trask, Alsea and Nestucca Rivers will be the “go to” spots. There are many smaller streams & creeks that will fish well also. After the Christmas holiday it’s time to get serious as the big wild natives will be entering our river systems and these fish can hit the twenty-pound mark. I live for these fish! I hope that ODFW’s horrible steelhead broodstock program on some of these rivers doesn’t put an end to wild steelhead.  You can’t continue to “mine” wild steelhead eggs from the river for this worthless program.

To sacrifice wild steelhead in order to make a harvestable fish during the Jan-March season when wild fish return is a joke. Sorry for the rant but bad things will happen with this program in place.

Somewhere South or North of Thanksgiving we generally get a nice big dumping of rain that blows out Oregon Coast streams. Signaling the end of Chinook season and the beginning of Winter Steelhead time. So, with the rivers high and dirty I sit in the office, finishing up some much needed tasks, like the annual Fall Photo Gallery.

It was a good Fall season, but not quite the epic season of 2011. Coho numbers, which were incredible in 2011, were almost non-existent this year, leaving a little hole in the Fall fishing program. However, Summer Steelheading was better than average and Chinook returned well as expected. Sea-Run cutthroat made a strong showing and added great fishing opportunities during low water in September and the first half of October. This years “Grand Slam” time turned into “The Coastal Triple”, but we’ll take a triple any day of the week. Enjoy the Fall 2012 Chinook Salmon, Summer Steelhead and Sea-Run Cutthroat Photo Gallery
