The trout action has been slow this past week with the wind and wild weather, but the warming days and county and DFW plants this week, the bite should kick back into gear by the weekend. Steven Hill, Barstow, landed three rainbows during the slow down and his best was a four-pounder. He was fishing chartreuse PowerBait. There have also been a few catfish starting to be caught. The trout bite has been excellent over the past week and weekly plants by the county have kept the bite good. Most anglers are getting at least one trout topping the two-pound mark, and a few better fish have been caught since the derby two weekends ago. Top this past week was a 10.3-pounder landed by Larry Creason, Hesperia, fishing a Trout Nugget. Overall the best action has been on PowerBait, inflated nightcrawlers, or small trout jigs. There were 119 derby participants and 77 weighed in fish. Big fish was a 9-2 landed by Richard Herrera, Irwindale, on a white Power worm. Adrian Contreras, Riverside, had a nine-pounder for second on a yellow and white Pee-Wee Jig. Tristian Herrison, Rancho Cucamonga, was third with an 8-4, while Brad Bruton, Phelan, was fourth with an eight-pounder. Fifth was captured with a 6-11 rainbow landed by Hoss Rucker, Grand Terrace, and he had trout at 4-4, 3-2, 2-3 and 2-2 on his stringer. Danny Orona, Colton, had sixth with a 6-5 trout. Fair to good trout action on rainbows averaging about a pound and a number of bigger trout over the past week. The best bite has been on small trout jigs, PowerBait, and small trout worms in bright colors. The marshmallow-meal worm combo is also getting a lot of fish. Dave Matthews, Victorville, landed a 7-8 rainbow on a trout jig. Jose Garcia, Victorville, landed a 5-8 rainbow on a jig with a meal worm.
