The catfish bite has been pretty fair throughout the lake this past week with the best bite on cut mackerel and chicken liver. There was a 3,000-pound plant July 3 and the next plant will be 1,000 pounds on July 31. Only a few bass showing on reaction baits early and late in the day when they are up chasing shad. Still the odd crappie being caught on a live shiner. For information contact the Ranger Station at 760-839-4346 or go to the website at www.wohlfordlake.com

The catfish plant last week really turned on the bite on whiskerfish, especially along the west buoy line and off Crappie Rock. Cut mackerel and chicken liver have been the top baits. The weekend catfish derby was won by Ron Horner, Esconidod, with a 9-11 cat. The crappie fishing is experiencing a resurgence with good sized fish being caught in Oakvale and the vicinity of Crappie Rock on small finger jigs or live shiners. The bass bite are slow to fair with the best bite early and late in the day on crawdads, Shad Rap-style cranksbaits, or dark colored plastics. Also some topwater.
