Trout plants set to start in December with a 6,000-pound plant just before the Dec. 13 opening day of trout season. The lake is now closed on weekdays, but it will remain open for weekends until trout season starts and then again be open seven days a week. The bass action has been fair on mostly smaller fish, with plastics and nightcrawlers good bets. Catfish are fair on cut mackerel or chicken liver. SAN DIEGO AREA LAKES

     BARRETT: Closed for the season. Lake information: 619-465-3474 or www.sandiego.gov/water/recreation/.

     HODGES: Closed for the season. Information: 760-432-2023.

     EL CAPITAN: There were 33 anglers checked by county staff this past week and they reported 83 bass and six crappie. The lake is open Thursday through Monday with boat rentals available all five days. General lake information: 619-465-3474 or www.sandiego.gov/water/recreation/.      LOWER OTAY: There were 105 anglers checked by county staff this past week and they reported 189 bass to 9.9 pounds, 22 bluegill to a pound, two crappie and three catfish to 15 pounds. Otay is open on a Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday schedule and boat rentals are available all three days. General lake information: 619-465-3474 or www.sandiego.gov/water/recreation/.      UPPER OTAY: There were four anglers checked by county staff this past week and they reported four bass to 2.32 pounds. The lake is open on a Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday for catch-and-release fishing (only artificial lures with single, barbless hooks), sunrise to sunset.      MURRAY: No county or marina reports. Lake information: 619-466-4847 or www.sandiego.gov/water/recreation/. There are boat rentals Friday through Sunday and the new concession number is 619-466-4847.

     WOHLFORD: The lake is now closed on weekdays, but it will remain open for weekends throughout the fall. Catfish are fair on cut mackerel or chicken liver. The bass bite has been improving with the best action in the mornings and evenings. Few other reports.      DOANE POND: No recent DFW plants.

     DIXON LAKE: The first plant of the season went in Wednesday this week with a plant of Nebraska Tailwalkers. The 36th Annual Trout Derby has been rescheduled for Dec. 5-7. Over the past week the fishing has been slow to fair with just a few catfish, bass and bluegill reported. Top fish was a nine-pound catfish landed by Francisco Lagunas, Escondido, using shrimp.      POWAY: Trout season has been set for December 4 with a 3,000-pound plant of Chaulk Mound Trout Farm’s Nebraska Tailwalkers. Plants will be every other week this season through April next year. The catfish bite has been fair on cut baits. Bass fair to good on plastics and small swimbaits with some good reaction bait action early and late in the day. Small bluegill are good in most shallow shoreline areas with some bigger bluegill in 12 to 20 feet of water. Lake information: 858-668-4772, tackle shop recording 858-486-1234, or www.poway.org.

     JENNINGS: The trout season kicks off the Saturday when the gates open at 6 a.m. The first plants of the season -- 4,000-pounds of Sierra Bows and Nebraska Tailwalkers -- went in this week and the lake is closed to fishing Friday to allow the trout time to acclimate before the opener on Saturday. There will be awards for the five largest trout opening day along with a host of giveaways and activities. The fishing continues to be good for bass and cats in spite of a yo-yoing lake level. There also continues to be a fair bite for redear and bluegill in Half Moon Cove and off the Fishing Float for anglers fishing red worms, meal worms, and small nightcrawlers.      MORENA: There has been a fair to good catfish bite this past week with the best action on mackerel, bonito, and nightcrawlers, especially along the shoreline near the dam. Some fish topping five pounds. Bass remain fair on plastics, nightcrawlers, with some topwater early and late. Brain Fansher, Lake Morena, had a 3-8 bass on a Senko. A few bluegill showing, but crappie are slow. Carp are pretty decent for the few anglers targeting the carp with dough baits. Trout plants tentatively slated to start in December.      CUYAMACA: The trout action has been fair to good with a Mt. Lassen Trout plant the end of October. No DFW plants yet this season. Some fish to five pounds. Also a pretty fair catfish bite. Information: 760-765-0515 or www.lakecuyamaca.org.
