Fishing is ok.  Some dry fly targets in the afternoon in the flat water.  Get used to the size of fish...this isn't 1982.  Pressure is high in all of the bumpy water, solitude in the flat water.

Fishing has been good on Hat Creek! Saw a few Salmon Flies this weekend! The rainbows are not huge, but it's really fun casting a fly here and connecting with the aggressive rainbows mid day as the PMDs come off. This is just such a perfect stream to walk and wade. Casting big salmon fly dries under over-hung branches! No reports of Green Drakes!

Just a few days left to fish the waters of Hat Creek. This stream closes to fishing for 2012 on November 15th. Best bite has been at the Power House #2 riffle. Look for decent hatches of BWOs and Flavs in the late morning hours. Midges are definitely a dominant insect right now. The fishing can be great! Walk the flats downstream of the Power House #2 riffle and keep a sharp eye out for rising rainbows. A #18 Parachute Adams is a good choice!

Wettish, cloudy weather in the forecast this week should produce better hatches of BWOs and maybe, possibly, Green Drakes. It happens! October Caddis are still busy hatching every evening before sunset. The fishing has been great. Hat Creek closes for the 2012 season on November 15th.

No big changes this week. Fishing remains good. October caddis are active near sunset. There are rainbows and browns, some rainbrowns too, eating emerging caddis along the edges of the river. The Power House #2 riffle is a great spot to fish. Anglers suspending #18-20 black or brown midges or mayfly patterns are hooking up! Hat Creek closes for the 2012 season on November 15th.

The best fishing has been in the early hours of the day this week. Thanks to a "midge hatch", the rainbows and browns of Hat Creek search the waters surface for emerging #18-22 midges for about two hours. By 10:00 AM, the midge-bite subsides.

Look for October Caddis along the section of Hat Creek downstream of HWY 299. Have a couple October Caddis dry imitations and fish them dropping a #18 Micro-May. The Powerhouse #2 riffle has been fishing consistently all day. Best dry fly results happen early in the day, then again near sunset. Insect hatches have been more active and should continue through October. The morning hatches consist of BWOs at or near sunrise, then caddis come off near 10:00 PM. Midges are a big part of the Hat Creek rainbow diet. Rising fish can be found in the flats below the Powerhouse riffle when the sun is low. Bring 7x if you hope to fool these crafty rainbows.

Fishing is fair. Weekly plants continue but pressure is light. Best bet is nightcrawlers, then crickets and salmon eggs. Brook trout are the most active. Crytal buggers and copper Johns also get fish. Rimrock Ranch (530) 335-7114

The fishing has been fair this week. Best fishing happens in the late AM hours and then again near sunset. Look for rainbows eating #16-18 caddis in the AM hours and a sparse hatch of pale evening duns near sunset. A dry-dropper set up has been working great for some anglers. Cooler daytime temperatures and the shorter days of autumn will produce better fly fishing. Right now is a good time to plan your autumn fly fishing trip to Hat Creek.

Trout fishing is good. Pressure is fairly light. Trout plants are being cut back to once per week. Brook trout, pansize to three to four pounds, are being caught. Nightcrawlers have been the best bait. Black Panther Martins with red dots on a gold blade are effective. Rimrock Ranch (530) 335-7114
