There were some fishable hatches in the afternoon on the overcast days, which presented some dry fly opportunities.  Nymphing has been pretty tough overall.  Sinking line techniques have worked ok at times.  Dry fly fishing and nymphing will improve as the weed beds continue to grow and provide more cover for fish and insect hatches.  Mega crowded on weekends.

Welcome to the new 2013 season on Fall River! The reports are going to be mixed this week. There will be a few good reports and some tough one's too. It's still a little early in the season for Fall River. The fishing can get better by late May. All said, you should find a few rainbows and enjoy the big views of Mt. Shasta to the west!

Call 800-669-3474 to book a guided day of fly fishing! Or just send us an e-mail and we will get right back to you!

When you come, stay at Circle 7 Guest Ranch or Spinner Fall Lodge and have unfettered access to waters swimming with rainbows!

The Fly Shop's® Tips: Swinging #16 Pheasant Tail nymphs trailing #18-20 black Zebra midges or WD-40s is a basic fly rig and a perfect combo to start with any day on Fall River.

Look for mayfly hatches after 9:00 AM through 2:00 PM.

Opening week forecast Well, after 3 weeks of chasing tarpon in Mexico, I am back "home" on Fall River. Andrew, Tommy, and I all have our boats in the water and have scouted most of the river out. Not many weeds and hatches just yet, but the color is excellent and we found some giant pods of fish that have not been pummeled for 5 whole months! The streamer grab should be insane if you are on fish. The grab will be tough later in the afternoon high sun, but they might still eat nymphs in the deeper slots lower down river where there is more color. The Mac and Pit are in excellent shape as well. The forecast is warm and sunny for this week. I have spent many an opening weekend in cold rain and snow, so I will enjoy the weather. Clouds would be most welcome too... The Hat will be mega crowded at the powerhouse riffle and lower riffle section. Seek solitude and technical fishing in the flats between. The smaller creeks should be in great shape for dry fly fishing. I will soon post a report and pics of the Mexico Tarpon Tour. It was absolutely insane. Amazing fishery. We hooked many, many, Tarpon, and had an absolute blast off of the water as well. Possibly the most exciting fishing I've done over my many angling travels. I will host two trips there next year, contact me for very limited space.

Less than a few days left in 2012 to fish Fall River. Fishing has been best late mornings through 3:30pm. For some reason the bite dies off in the late afternoon. Good reports have come in from anglers fishing the upper river, near spring creek. Nymphs seem to be the fly of choice, however some fish can be found rising to PMDs and BWOs in the AM hours. Fall River closes to fishing November 15th.

Fishing has been good. Weather looks great for the next week. The cloudy wettish conditions in the forecast bode well for denser hatches of BWOs and possibly Mahoganies. Dark Caddis in #16 are occurring in the late afternoons, early evenings. Fishing has been best in the Island Road area, and then upstream from the bridge. The lower river can be busy with duck hunters. Fall River closes for the season on November 15th. Bring your favorite 5wt fly rod, a 5x tapered leader and a spool or two of 6x and 7x.

Fall River is fishing great one day, then fair the next. There are more than enough rainbows in this stream, allowing all anglers AM dry fly fishing and nymphing under indictors or on the swing or strip during the afternoon. Fall is a great option! Bring your favorite 5wt fly rod, a 5x tapered leader and a spool or two of 6x and 7x.

We have exactly 31 days of fishing on Fall River for 2012. Hatches of caddis, baetis and a peppering of PMD's have kept the fishing solid this week. We can't come up with any reasons why the good times won't continue through November 15th. Bring your favorite 5wt fly rod, a 5x tapered leader and a spool or two of 6x and 7x.

Cobalt skies, brisk mornings and a peppering of fall colors. The fishing has been great! There's a mixture of caddis, baetis and PMDs in the morning hours. Enough insect activity to produce an action packed fly fishing session before lunch. The afternoon fishing consists of fishing nymphs and leeches. Sometimes the best fishing of the day happens in the afternoon when the 2:00PM breeze creates a texture on the river surface, making it harder for the rainbows to see you.

Good, even great reports coming out of Fall River this week. AM hatches of BWOs, Baetis and a peppering of PMDs will produce the top water feeding you look forward to. Bring your "A" game though! Might even bring 7x. The afternoon fishing session will save a lackluster AM, nymphing for hog rainbows that key on scuds, #16 Hogan's S&M, black Zebra Midges and swung Bird's Nests. Black or olive leeches always produce hook-ups on Fall River. It's gonna be a great time!

The fishing has been fair to good. Anglers are finding a small dry fly window in the early AM hours, then nymphing on the swing or under indicators should conjure up more than a few rainbows through the rest of the day.

Fishing great! You won't have to go far to find good fishing on Fall River. Seems like the entire 9 miles above the confluence has been fishing well this week, again. The fishing has been great! River conditions are ideal, the weather has been great. The dry fly fishing can be really good when there's a smoky haze thanks to forest fires off to the west. Fall is totally worth the extra effort right now!

I've been away from Fall River for about a month and much has changed. The water is higher and the weeds have grown in quite a bit. The river looks like it normally does, whereas in June and July it was low and not very weedy. There are fish everywhere, lots of them. The big fish are also spread out and present in large numbers. Yesterday we fished over some very difficult fish and got our buts kicked, only landing smaller rainbows. Today we found a run that held only big fish and they were much easier to fool. Lloyd from Livermore landed about ten fish before lunch time, all 12-18".

In the morning there is a mixed spinner fall of callibaetis, PMD, and trico spinners. The PMD and Callibaeties duns start to come off around 11am. Each fish seems to be keying on a different bug, so the dry fly fishing was very challenging. We did much better with small mayfly nymphs under indicators.

Late summer often produces some of the best fishing of the entire 7.5 month long season on Fall River. Over the past week, we have experienced good to great fishing. Rainbow trout can be found sipping trico spinners in the AM hours, then nymphs, leeches suspended under indictors or swung on sinking lines makes for great memories. Bring your 4wt and 5wt rods, floating lines!

The fishing has been great on Fall River! You might get into some smoke from fires located about 90 miles to the south, but afternoon winds will clear the haze. Did we say the fishing has been good? August is a "sleeper" of a month on Fall River. Sometimes the fishing can be absolutely stellar. There is always a chance at taking a big rainbow on a dry fly in the AM. Leeches and #18 PT nymphs, #18-20 black Zebra Midges and Hogan's S&M's have been the basic selection lately.

August is a perfectly good time to fish Fall River. Depending on where you go in the AM hours along the entire length of Fall River, the fishing can be action packed for about an hour or so, then tough for awhile. The rainbows are spread out from the very upper river all the way down to McArthur Rd. That's 15 miles of river! The afternoon wind can draw the rainbows out of the weeds where they eat Red Copper Johns, Midges Brown Micro Mays and good fishing lasts until about 4:30 PM. Rising rainbows are easy to spot in the early AM hours. Bring Trico spinners!

You might be able to fool a few fish on Hex's, but the famous evening hatch has started to wind-up for the 2012 season. In the AM hours, look for rainbows rising to Trico spinners and a few PMDs. Hatches remain light, but good reports are coming out of Fall River, just not everyday. Definitely bring a selection of olive leeches and fish those leeches on a full sinking line.

UPDATE:
Expect 30 minute delays on HWY 299 3 miles west of Ingot to 3 miles east of Montgomery Creek.

We spent the last day of our 2012 guide school on Fall River. The river was a bit slow, but Steve from Cloverdale caught a really nice rainbow. The fish weren't interested in the sinking line techniques today, but they would eat small mayfly nymphs under an indicator. We saw a few PMDs and water boatmen.
We had an excellent guide school this year. We had four students with two instructors each day, so they all got plenty of personal attention. The students had many opportunities to teach skills to the entire group and to guide us in a one-on-one scenario. We fished the Pit, Hat, Upper and Lower McCloud, Lower Sac, and Burney Creek. It was a great time and our four students made great strides in learning what being a fly fishing guide is all about
