My father (he is 91) and I wanted to go fishing someplace local this weekend. Santa Fe damn was hosting the Renaissance Fair, so that’s out, Irvine lake is a mud hole, Corona is dried up, Santa Ana Lakes is just to ugly for us so we gave Guasti Lake a try …this was our first time there.

Keep in mind we are avid High Sierra fishermen, we love the small creeks (like Convict) and beauty of the Sierra mountain range so we did not expect much when we drove to Guasti at 8:00am Sunday.  It was $10.00 per car and $8.00 per person to fish…so we are into this for $26.00 right out of the gate (you MUST have a California Fishing License as well).  The young lady working the entry gate was very helpful telling us when the last stocking was, where to go to fish and that they had bait etc. if needed. ..so off we went per her advice.

We drove around the northern side of the park, and headed to the far east, to a dirt parking lot…the lake was right there. We unloaded our gear and walked to one of the “Shelters”. It had picnic tables, a wooded kiosk type thing with some mesh covering. Perfect for a sunny day AND the ease of access was great for my father.

It was a very windy day so we did not anticipate good fishing, we were an hour from home so we figured, we are here, lets give it a try regardless the wind.

There were a few fishermen spotted along the banks, all appeared to be having a good time but not a lot of action. I was fishing with two poles, one with Power Bait, floating garlic and the other with lures…mostly spinners.

After about ½ hour of fishing, I got a hit with a Rooster Tail, hooked a 10 in rainbow…Then about an hour later, the garlic bait attracted a 15 in rainbow  and landed him…my father, fishing with about the same rigging, never had any bites the whole day.

A young man (I assume he was around 10) caught a nice trout, looked about 15-20 inch long and a bit later, a group down the way caught another, about the same size....nice size trout for "stockers"

So we fished from 8:30 am to 3:00pm. The area was clean, the restrooms were as well kept as can be expected (It’s a San Bernardino County Park, dont expect to much) the parking, paved walkways and ease to the lake was VERY good. Is it Big Bear or Silverwood,,.,no, not even close but if you have the need to fish, this little regional park is ok and can satisfy the fishing addiction.  For less than an hour’s drive (I live in Irvine) and the fact that there really aren’t to many places to go fresh water fishing right now, I say pack up the family and head on over to Guasti…it sure beats working!

Fair to good trout action. Not a lot of limits, but most anglers getting one to three fish with the rainbows averaging about 1 1/2 to two pounds. Morris Velasquez, Ontario, had three rainbows with his best at four pounds. The best action has been in the big lake on PowerBait and small trout jigs and plastics. County trout plants are weekly, and DFW trout also went in last week. Information: 909-481-4205.

The first county plant of the season went in Thursday this week. No DFW plants yet this season. The park was closed Thursday and Friday as a precaution after the terrorist shooting in San Bernaridno. The park may be closed for the weekend, too. Details were not set at press time. Information: 909-481-4205.
