High flows have made the bite tough. The bass bite is OK but not what it should be this time of year, and the catfish bites are simply slow. The bass are best on plastics and nightcrawlers in the backwaters, and in the main river even the smallmouth are just fair in the rip-rap stretches of the river. Catfish are slow, with a few channels but still only the odd flathead reported. The backwater lakes and drain ditches have been better than the main river. The bluegill bite is starting to improve. Information: B&B Bait 760-921-2248.
