The Frog Bite's Nearly Here

Editor's note: This blog installment comes from Fishhound pro staffer Capt. Mike Gerry.
Every year, as we move into the month of August on Lake Guntersville, the frog bite moves to front and center and people from all over the country come to experience what we take for granted.
The explosion of a big largemouth bass as it blows through matted grass is like no other fishing phenomenon you'll ever experience. Nothing compares to this type of fishing. It's startling and heart-pumping and a sight to be seen when you realize you have a monster bass hung in matted grass.
When you set the hook with a frog, the weight of the fish combined with the grass is just mind-boggling. You'd better have a strong Duckett rod and Lew's reel set up with Vicious braided line, and then put your game fac
e on because you're in for a fight.
When you finally get the fish to the boat and this big bucketmouth bass shows its head, your heart fills with excitement and satisfaction that you can't experience in any other type of fishing.
This has become such a big part of fishing on Guntersville that tackle companies like Snag Proof and Spro all put on tournaments dedicated to frog fishing, in which you must use their products only during the tournament.
The Snag Proof Tournament's August 11, 2012 at Goose Pond and the Spro Tournament's August 25 at Waterfront Tackle. Each offers some big-money paybacks and prizes for the winners.
The frog bite's near, the excitement's in the air and it's time to experience what made Guntersville famous.
Remember: Not all grass areas are created equal. When froggin', look for the nastiest-looking grass you can find. You want your frog to create a trail over the scummy surface, and try to work your frog along points and holes in the grass.
The best time of year is nearly here.
