It is worm time of year and no bait offers so many different presentations as does fishing a worm; you can fish it so many different ways that you never get board. In fact I believe that a lot of today’s new baits were born out of the many different ways a worm has been fished over time.

If you go back to some of the original worm fisherman, they slow rolled the bait over grass for years and years. They would tell you if you think your fishing it slow go slower, hence the development of...

Since Paul Elias won the FLW on Guntersville, no bait has caught more big fish or won more tournaments than the A-rig....

When this year’s Bass Master Classic got underway at Grand Lake Oklahoma the anglers put the jerk bait presentation to test! Virtually every top contender started their day fishing with a jerk bait; the minnow shaped lure was the practice bait of choice and most expected it to produce during the tournament. Jerk baits are not only largemouth baits, but they will virtually produce bites from every species of bass known to man; I have seen...

The shad spawn, and although it’s a short period of time, it can mean the best bass fishing of the spring if you hit the right spots at the right times. Shad spawn when the water temperatures hit upper sixties to low seventies as well as during the full moon.  In Southeast TN, GA and AL this usually means the full moon in April and May. Shad normally spawn right at daybreak. Once the sun gets on the water, the shad spawn is usually over for the day; likewise if it remains cloudy it will last longer into the

After years of fighting over the gill nets being placed across Lake Guntersville, a ruling last November out of the courts finally removed them from our lake. It was an epic battle stemming back to the 70’s that placed the commercial fisherman against the sport fisherman on Guntersville. There were times when the local sport fisherman were subject to threats and hate mail as the ramps became a line of contention with nails and other sharp objects being spread over local ramps; with blame going to the gill netters as the group responsible.

The craze of the A-Rig has spread to other parts of the country with Oklahoma being the latest with a state record bass of 14.13 lbs. caught on the A-Rig. There has also been several fish on Guntersville caught over 10 lbs. recently with one over 13 lbs. weighted in during a local tournament. In Tennessee there was a tournament won recently with a total weight of 44 lbs. All caught on their 5 prong version with only 3 hooks allowed. The stringer included two 10 plus pound fish plus 24 lbs. of 3...

As the winter moves on and we start to get some warming sun against the east banks and shoreline working a small crank bait becomes a very effective presentation! There might be no better bait with high 40 and low 50 degree water temperatures, there are however a few keys to making it work for you.

The first and most obvious key is that the winter time crank baiting is all about warming banks, so the east side of the river in the afternoon becomes the target area to fish with the crank baits. Having rip rap on the bank is also a big key as rock warms in the sun and attracts the bass. Also, lay downs and red clay banks all warm in the afternoon so these are also good target areas to catch fish.

Another key is...

Over the many years of watching Lake Guntersville change I have seen many abrupt changes occur on the lake. The most prevalent thing that stands out to me is the lack of small fish, hence the lack of bites! A good day on the lake has gone from 30 to 40 fish a day to 8 or 10 fish a day. This is a telling change for the lake and a change as a guide that requires some creativity to get your customers enough bites to make them happy.

I believe that if you go fishing for bites instead fishing for largemouth only the results can be extremely different...

As we approach the time of year where we are fishing our soft plastic baits, there are certain visual keys that tell you something about soft plastic bait. One example of this is I believe that the softer the bait the longer the fish will hold it in its mouth. This means to me that when I am picking soft plastic bait some are rigid and almost hard others are soft to your touch. When you’re fishing skittish fish I believe soft plastic bait that is hard or rigid will get dropped quickly by a fish and cause you to miss many bites.

Also, many soft plastics have rings that surround the bait for some portion of the bait. A soft plastic with rings around it have the rings to create vibration. The rings also have a tendency to create bubbles as it falls, and seem to...

As years have passed on the fishing circuits, we have found that the bigger fish have moved deeper to escape the pressure of the enormous amount of fisherman on the water. We have approached these deeper fish in many different ways from Carolina rigs with heavy 1 oz. sinkers to the newest of them all an A-rig weighted with about 2 or more oz. of jig heads. The A-rig caused such a stir over the fact that it has 5 hooks on it that the BASS ruled it was not fit to use on their tournament circuit.

None of these deeper baits have the catching appeal to me as does a crank bait, but we have really not found a way to get a crank bait consistently to the 25 ft. depths to make it as effective as the A-rig has been. Some of the best of the crank baiters fishing the circuit, came...
