Ever-growing oxygen-starved areas in the Atlantic are shrinking habitat for high value fish like marlins, according to new research by NOAA fisheries biologist Eric Prince. According to the study, climate change is one of the key factors in the expansion of the so-called dead zones. As they grow, marlins, other billfish and tunas move into surface waters where they are more vulnerable to fishing. The researchers tagged a number of blue marlin and tracked their movement in relation to the...

This year’s version of the Long Beach Island Surf Fishing Classic is now history with its conclusion last Sunday. Since the final results were not official when I was putting this column together, I cannot say with absolute certainty who the top winners were. However, I am pretty sure that Gary Naylor of Mount Holly probably took the top spot with the 41.5-pound striped bass he caught back on opening day, Oct. 8. It is unusual for an angler to lead the contest from start to finish. Second place...

A whole stringer of folks are working to make sure Iowans can catch fish close to home. After all, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources figures, people are busy. Gas prices are high. Tests have found signs of Asian carp in the Mississippi River north of the last major physical barrier keeping the invasive species of fish from spreading into many of the state's most popular central and northern lakes, officials said Thursday. Minnesota Department of Natural Resources spokesman Chris Niskanen said the sensitive tests have detected DNA from silver carp in the water above the Coon Rapids Dam, which is upstream from Minneapolis. It is good news for offshore fishermen.  The Department of Marine Resources is about to release 8,000 Cobia at two offshore fishing reefs. The Cobia enhancement project is the result of a public-private partnership between the DMR and a commercial fish farm in Stone County. Ten of the giant saltwater tanks inside Aqua Green's warehouse are filled with Cobia, also known as Lemonfish. The commercial aqua culture facility in Stone County is raising thousands of fish for the DMR. "They're a fast...

December is a quiet time for the Southeast Alaska fresh water sport fisher. Most if not all of our regional fishing opportunities are now peacefully hidden under sheets of mirrored ice and thick blankets of snow. Days spent swinging flies to chrome bright salmon, streamside lunches with family and friends and the excitement of adventuresome fly-outs to remote watersheds are now cherished memories of the past summer. To the chorus and colors of the holiday season another angling chapter in our...

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission approved a notice of intent on the establishment of a free permit for recreational anglers who fish for yellowfin tuna. The information gathered from this permit would provide essential data about who fishes off Louisiana’s coast for yellowfin and how much is harvested each year. “The current system is based upon data that is often old by the time it is in use,” said Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Assistant Secretary Randy Pausina...
