Todd Young of Nazareth had quite a catch on May 6.

Fishing on Lake Erie for the first time, Young nabbed a 29-pound, 4-ounce lake trout that the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission officially certified as a state record fish for the species on Wednesday.

Young, who recently graduated from Clarion University, caught the fish on a Northern King spoon about three miles offshore from Harbor Creek less than 10 minutes into the trip he took with his father and two friends.

The record-breaking lake trout was more than 3 feet long, but state records are certified by weight. His fish outweighed the previous record 27-pound, 13-ounce lake trout caught by Tom Illar Jr. on Lake Erie in 1996.

According to a wire tag in the fish's snout, the fish was raised at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Allegheny National Fish Hatchery and stocked several years ago
