A fisherman in Nebraska was shocked to find out that the dead weight that he had snagged was actually a live grenade.
The 31-year-old was casting from shore on the evening of August 2, at Wagon Train Lake near Hickman, when his hook became snagged on something on the bottom of the lake. The snag had give, so the angler began slowly reeling in the dead weight, only to discover that he had caught a hand grenade that appears to be from the Vietnam era.
The fisherman immediately called the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office. According to the Lincoln Journal Star, the police were not sure if the grenade was live, so they called in the Nebraska State Patrol bomb squad.
After the police evacuated Wagon Train Lake, the bomb squad performed a controlled detonation of the partially corroded grenade.
